Overview

The Nantucket Hotel & Resort is seeking a General Manager to lead the daily operations of our Fitness Club. This pivotal role involves comprehensive oversight of our fitness center, ensuring an exceptional experience for our members and guests.

The General Manager will be responsible for supervising a dedicated team, including the Club Manager, Club Assistant Manager, Club Desk Attendants, Club Activities Counselors, Fitness Instructors, and Personal Trainers. Key responsibilities include:

  • Operational Management: Directing daily club activities, ensuring all facilities (pool area, locker rooms, studio, hot tub, etc.) are well-maintained, fully functional, and appropriately stocked.
  • Staffing & Scheduling: Hiring, training and developing staff. Creating and managing staff schedules to guarantee adequate coverage for all services, and actively filling in for any open shifts as needed. Able to work holidays and weekends.
  • Program Support: Assisting with the seasonal Kid's Program. This will include recruiting, hiring and scheduling.
  • Financial & Marketing Oversight: Tracking budgets and membership sales, and collaborating closely with our marketing team to develop and implement effective sales and marketing campaigns.
  • Customer Service Excellence: Upholding and promoting the highest standards of customer service within the Club.

Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Relentlessly focused on providing the best possible experience for members, guests, vendors, and team members.
  • Assist with club member sales and payment processing.
  • Assist with outbound member communications.
  • Maintaining the equipment, including repairing and replacing items as necessary.
  • Enhancing profitability by organizing and delivering an appropriate range of fitness activities and programs.
  • Setting and contributing to targets for attracting new members.
  • Work with marketing to initiate membership sales campaigns.
  • Ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation.
  • Proactively and professionally handle member complaints and suggestions.
  • Reviewing data about class attendance to identify opportunities.
  • Oversee the entire Club staff including Kids Club when in season.
  • Interview, hire, and supervise all club candidates and fitness instructors.
  • Maintaining knowledge of the latest fitness trends.
  • Manage budgets and forecasts.
  • Collaborate with GM, owners, and department heads to create, establish, and enforce member policies.
  • Ensure cleanliness of the club and children's program.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Fitness equipment knowledge.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Preferred knowledge of RDP and membership software.
  • Must be available to work a schedule that will include holidays, weekends, and varied shift times.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills to work closely with team members, clients, and guests.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of three years of professional experience in fitness club management preferred or a similar management position. 
  • Current industry certification through nationally recognized certifying body (NASM, ACE, ACSM, or NSCA) is beneficial but not required.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid Certification or the ability to become certified in the first 60 days of employment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • It may be necessary to lift/assist others in lifting heavy workloads up to 100 pounds or more - physical activity is expected.
